Organizers are encouraging members of the public to reserve seats for former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ presentation of the Marshall Lecture on Thursday, April 11.

The 11 a.m. event at Hudson’s Bay High School, 1206 E. Reserve St., is free and open to the public. Reservations aren’t required, but the lecture draws a large student audience and public seating is limited.

The Fort Vancouver National Trust encourages reserving seats online at fortvan.org/marshall. Attendees are asked to be seated by 10:45 a.m.

Gates became the 22nd defense secretary in 2006, under President George W. Bush. President Barack Obama kept Gates on until he resigned in 2011.

The lecture is the cornerstone event of Celebrate Freedom, a program of the Fort Vancouver National Trust in partnership with the city of Vancouver.

The lecture honors Gen. George C. Marshall, who served at Vancouver Barracks as commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade from 1936 to 1938.
