Workers at Metro Metals Northwest in Vancouver put their emergency training and equipment to good use Friday when a truck driver suffered a medical emergency at their business.

Vancouver Fire Department Capt. Kevin Murray said the truck driver, a man in his 50s, was stricken while making a delivery at the business, 900 Port Way, at about 10:50 a.m. Friday.

“They called 911, but also — much to their credit — someone went to get the AED while someone else started hands-only CPR,” Murray said Saturday. “When we got there, they were doing a fabulous job.”

So fabulous, Murray said, that the truck driver was conscious and able to talk with paramedics en route to the hospital.

It was the third time in three months that having an automatic electronic defibrillator made a big difference in a medical emergency like this, Murray said.

He also praised the workers for following their training and having one worker start hands-only CPR while another went for the AED.

“They just did a great job,” Murray said.

The names of the victim and his rescuers were not available Saturday.
