The Connecticut-based Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, the gambling arm of the Mohegan Tribe, operates the Mohegan Sun in southeastern Connecticut and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania. The authority has been working with the Cowlitz Indian Tribe on plans to operate a casino in Clark County.
However, those plans were dealt a serious blow on March 7 by a U.S. district judge, who threw out a 2010 Record of Decision that gave the tribe the right to establish a reservation west of La Center. The judge gave the federal government 60 days to issue a new Record of Decision.
In January, the gaming authority reported $1.7 billion in debt, nearly unchanged from a year earlier, and cited across-the-board declines in gaming, gross slot, table game and nongaming revenues.
LEDYARD, Conn. — Once the envy of Indian Country for its billion-dollar casino empire, the tribe that owns the Foxwoods Resort Casino is in a financial crisis and pursuing more revenue from an unlikely source: U.S. government grants.
