CHS musicians head to state

The Papermakers earned accolades at a recent music competition.

Isaac Hodapp and Haley Sawyer will represent Camas High School at the state competition next month.

During a recent district solo and ensemble festival, the two won their respective divisions.

Hodapp, a freshman, will compete in the trumpet solo category, while Sawyer, a senior, fared well in the (vocal) soprano category. They will represent the Lower Columbia River Music Educators Association division.

More than 50 vocalists and soloists competed in the district contest, held Feb. 23. There are 22 districts statewide.

Senior Jason Hamann was the first alternate in the baritone category.

Senior Erica Abrahamsen was selected as the first alternate in the alto saxophone solo division, as was junior Jonathan Liao in the piano solo category. Junior Amanda Felipe was chosen as second alternate in the flute solo division

“These are all highly competitive categories,” said Richard Mancini, band director. “We are very proud of their achievements.”

According to coach/mentor Ron Wright, the black score of 69 points was a Papermaker record in a regional tournament, and the sixth consecutive year the team has won the tournament.

“Things are looking very good for the future, too,” he said. “In the middle school division, Skyridge placed second and Liberty placed fourth. Every one of the 19 Liberty team members scored at least one medal.

Mature Learning celebrates its 40th year

At 40 years old, Clark College’s Mature Learning Program is young compared to its many students, all of whom are age 55 or older. However, it is one of the oldest senior studies programs in the nation, according to a press release.

To honor this milestone, Clark College’s Mature Learning program is throwing itself a “Fabulous 40” birthday party on Friday, March 29, with a full day of free classes, presentations and a guest lecture by nationally recognized neuroscientist Dr. Larry Sherman.

The half-day event will be held at Clark College at Columbia Tech Center, 18700 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd. It will include a full roster of “mini-classes,” from which attendees can choose topics as diverse as Belle Epoque Paris and T’ai Chi, to Drawing and The Future of Science. The entire event is free and open to the public of all ages.

“Mature Learning offers seniors the chance to take fascinating classes taught by brilliant instructors,” said Tracy Reilly Kelly, Mature Learning program manager. “We have a long legacy of excellence to celebrate.”
