The Fort Vancouver National Trust is launching a two-month, $200,000 initiative to get 2,000 community members involved in raising money for the purchase of the historic Mother Joseph Academy in Vancouver.

Columbia Credit Union helped kick off the campaign Monday with a $100,000 matching gift. The goal is to recruit 50 community leaders who will each connect with 40 people who can donate $100 or more.

In a news release, Steve Kenny — president and CEO of Columbia Credit Union — said the community-leader reference isn’t about a title: “It’s about building a great community — together.”

Organizers have dubbed it the “P2” (purchase/preserve) campaign on behalf of the 140-year-old building and its 7-acre site. The Fort Vancouver National Trust is seeking $10.6 million to purchase the Academy in 2013, and pay for $5 million in capital improvements from 2013 through 2017.

So far, the campaign has focused on larger donations, securing nearly $3.75 million, and is waiting for responses totaling more than $3 million, said Elson Strahan, president and CEO of the Trust.
