Try This: Plenty o’fun, no blarney

For St. Patrick’s Day weekend the Liberty Theatre presents the classic 1952 film directed by John Ford, “The Quiet Man.” The film stars John Wayne as Irish-born American Sean Thornton who travels to Ireland to reclaim his family’s farm. Sean falls in love with his fiery neighbor, Mary Kate Danagher (Maureen O’Hara), but her brother refuses to let the couple marry in the Irish tradition. The film won Oscars for Best Directing and Cinematography. “The Quiet Man” is rated G.

The Kiggins Theatre will also offer a bit of Irish flair with the animated movie “The Secret of Kells.” Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, this tale set in Medieval Ireland follows 12-year-old Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire), who wonders about life outside the village walls that protect the local abbey and its important manuscripts from the Viking raids. When Brendan is tasked with finding the right berries for ink, he discovers a sprite named Aisling (Christen Mooney) and together they brave the terrors of the forest. “The Secret of the Kells” is not rated.

2. Limerick laughs

Magenta Improv Theater presents “Luck of the Improv,” a family-friendly comedy show done in the style of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” The group takes suggestions from the audience to create St. Patrick’s Day-inspired skits.

3. Luck of the Irish

St. Paddy’s for Kids is a free themed event that embraces the green of spring. Featuring hands-on activities from making wildflower seed balls to a flower-planting station, there also will be games including the Pot O’ Gold Scavenger Hunt. Prizes will be provided by nonprofit groups and local businesses.

4. A fresh start to spring

Vancouver Farmers Market reopens for the season, showcasing regional bounties. Visitors can discover spring flowers, garden and herb seedlings, baked goods, seasonal produce from rhubarb to potatoes and winter squash, food and crafts at the downtown market featuring more than 250 vendors. The market will be open every weekend from March 16 through Oct. 27.

5. Canines of all kinds

Visitors can watch more than 100 dogs in a variety of breeds — golden retrievers and German shepherds to poodles and Lhasa apsos — vying for titles at the 2013 Evergreen State Winter Sieger dog show. Dogs are judged individually; puppies compete in separate categories. Part of International All Breed Canine Association of America, there will be two shows each day, with best-in-show exhibits around 3 p.m. both days.
