One man suffered a gunshot wound and a second was detained for questioning Thursday night after a shooting in Vancouver’s Orchard Park.

The incident came to light at about 8:50 p.m. when someone checked in to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Investigators went to the hospital and to Orchards Park, 9800 N.E. 54th St. A sheriff’s deputy had heard a single gunshot around 8:26 p.m. while conducting a different investigation in the same area, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Moments later, a man, 39, left the park and was stopped by the deputy. He said he was at the park when an unknown man stole his backpack. He tried to get the bag back, but the thief walked away with his friends.

The 39-year-old confronted the group at their vehicle, where he pulled out his gun and broke out the window of the car, the news release said. A single shot was fired during the altercation. The vehicle’s occupants then fled from the park.

The injury was not life-threatening. No one was arrested in connection with the shooting incident.

Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Phil Sample confirmed there was a shooting at the park and that the case remained under investigation by the Major Crimes office.

Names were not released.
