College Notebook: Sac State’s Martin garners Big Sky softball honors
Mountain View graduate hits .500 as Hornets go 4-1

Sacramento State sophomore Paige Martin was named Big Sky Conference’s Softball Player of the Week, respectively after the Hornets won four of their five games at last week’s Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo.
In five games last week, the Mountain View High School graduate hit .500 (9 for 18) with a double, two triples, four RBI, a .778 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage.
Martin had multiple-hit games three times, hit safely in all but one game, and batted .556 (5 for 9) with runners in scoring position., .667 (8 for 12) with runners on base, and .500 (6 for 12) with two outs. In addition, Martin struck out just two times in 18 at-bats and was flawless defensively in right field.
She was 3 for 3 with a walk, double, run and an RBI against Rutgers, 3 for 4 with a run, triple and two RBI against Nevada, 2 for 3 with a run, triple and RBI against Northern Illinois and 1 for 4 in the Hornets’ second game against Cal Poly. Her only hitless game during the week came in the Hornets’ 2-0 win against Cal Poly on Saturday.
Martin is batting .383 (23 for 60) on the season, with a .448 on-base percentage.
She had a streak of reaching base safely via hit and/or walk in 13 consecutive games snapped when she went 0 for 4 against Cal Poly. She has seven multiple-hit games this year, tied for most on the Hornets.
Sacramento State (12-6) returns to action later this week by hosting the 21st annual Capital Classic tournament Friday through Sunday at Shea Stadium.
The Hornets will face Texas State, Saint Mary’s, Fresno State and Kansas.
PLU’s Beatty named to DIII Team of Week
Pacific Lutheran junior right-hander Max Beatty was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week after pitching the Lutes to a 1-0 win over Willamette last Saturday in the team’s Northwest Conference opener.
The Hudson’s Bay High School graduate improved his season record to 3-1, allowing just three hits while striking out five and walking none in eight innings of work.
SPU’s Decker runs 800 P.R. at nationals
Seattle Pacific freshman Lynelle Decker ran a personal record in the preliminaries of the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Birmingham, Ala., but did not advance to the national finals.
The Mountain View High School graduate finished in 2 minutes, 13.06 seconds. Her previous best of 2:13.64 at the SPU Last Chance National Qualifier meet on Feb. 23 gave her a qualifying time in the event.
