Construction on a new freeway interchange at Northeast 139th Street will mean periodic lane closures for the next six weeks, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Drivers will encounter daytime lane closures on both directions of Interstate 205 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The left lane of northbound I-205 will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. on those days; the left lane of southbound I-205 will close from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The closures begin today, and will continue until mid-April, according to WSDOT.
The changes give crews enough room to excavate, pour concrete and build support columns for a new bridge carrying 139th Street over the freeways, according to WSDOT. The work is part of the Salmon Creek Interchange Project, a $133 million effort to remake the northern convergence of Interstate 5 and I-205.
Work may be rescheduled due to weather, according to WSDOT. Crews plan to avoid rush hour traffic, the agency said.
The project is expected to be complete in 2014.
