Talking Points: Withholding the allowance

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

This week’s candidate for Sports Parent of the Year happens to hail from Ridgefield.

Julie Thompson, you see, is a Clark County native and is the mother of the Golden State Warriors’ Klay Thompson. The same Klay Thompson who happened to get involved in a scrum last week against the Indiana Pacers.

Klay was fined $35,000 by the NBA for his role in the mini-brawl, but his actions might prove to be more costly than that. According to BelieveTheHype.com, Klay’s finances are controlled by his parents, Julie and Mychal. The same Mychal who happened to be a 13-year NBA veteran.

Julie apparently was out getting some dinner when the brawl occurred, so Mychal recorded it for her to watch later. When she got home, Mychal said, ” ‘Sit down and watch your dumb son.’ She got a kick out of it. She thought it was funny.”

But Klay might not find it so funny when he receives his next stipend from his parents. “He will (find out he’s been fined by us) when he sees that cash envelope show up a little short this week,” Mychal said.

Manti Te’o ran 4.82 seconds on Monday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and while the 40-yard dash is just a small part of the equation for NFL teams in their evaluation, it didn’t help Te’o.

“I think that’s something that I’m going to get better, Te’o said. “The only way from here is up, so I’m definitely going to get better at that.”

No doubt that Te’o is basing his belief that he can run faster on a report he read on the internet.
