Shahala Middle School will host a free sci-fi family night/book fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the school’s library, 601 S.E. 192nd Ave. The school’s Parent Teacher Organization is requesting donations to help buy books for the school’s library, as well as books and supplies for Crestline Elementary, which was destroyed by fire on Feb. 3. Crestline families have been invited to attend.

Activities include a Scholastic Book Fair, sci-fi/fantasy trivia and memorabilia, a costume contest, paper lightsaber making, games, contests and give-aways, a used book sale and some “real science” information tables, said Paul Warner, the school’s new teacher-librarian who formerly taught at Pacific Middle School and hosted the event there for many years.

Costumed members of the 501st Legion from Portland will attend and will pose for photos. In past events, Darth Vader, stormtrooopers, clone troopers, Boba Fett and others attended, Warner said. This year’s event includes a life-size working R2D2 robot.
