Fire officials stress safety as local fireworks sales begin Friday

Responsibility, respect, civility urged at holiday celebrations

Friday marks the beginning of firework sales for the Fourth of July holiday, and fire officials are hoping those who celebrate are responsible, respectful and civil.

Tim Dawdy, battalion chief and fire marshal with Clark County Fire & Rescue, also stressed the importance of safe fireworks disposal.

One Fourth of July, Dawdy said, a home in Battle Ground caught on fire after residents left a flammable container on their wooden back porch. Fire crews arrived near midnight and stopped the fire, but the home was a total loss, Dawdy.

Dawdy said used fireworks should be placed in a metal container filled with water, away from the home.

“Use fireworks as designed,” he said.

In case of an emergency, dial 911, said Clark County Fire Marshal Jon Dunaway.

Do not relight any fireworks that malfunction, Dunaway said, and make sure to light any firework at least 25 feet away from any building.

In Clark County, it is illegal to possess or discharge firecrackers, salutes, chasers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, M-80s, M-1000s and homemade devices. Fines for illegal possession and use of these kinds of fireworks can reach up to $1,000, with a possible 90 days in jail. Here are the local regulations throughout the county:
