An allegedly drunken 17-year-old drove the wrong way on Northeast Ninth Street in Vancouver’s Hearthwood neighborhood and was fleeing from police when he hit a tree.
At 12:27 a.m. this morning, Sgt. Mike Chylack saw a blue Pontiac traveling east at about 10 mph in the westbound lane of Ninth Street near Northeast 145th Avenue, said Kim Kapp, spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department. Chylack attempted to pull the sedan over. The driver turned onto Northeast 150th Avenue and did not yield, but continued driving slowly.
Once the driver pulled over and Chylack approached the car, the Pontiac sped off, Kapp said. As Chylack got back into his patrol car, he could hear tires squealing. The Pontiac ran into a tree in a resident’s yard at 14803 N.E. Sixth St.
Another officer located the driver and his passenger, also 17, two blocks from the accident site. The identities of both teens were withheld.
