Jordan Berni of Skyview fame took home MVP honors at the Summer Classic all-state, all-star football game in Moses Lake on Friday night.
The quarterback completed 16 of 27 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for a touchdown, leading the “East” squad to a 38-21 victory in a game featuring recent graduates from the Class 4A and 3A football programs from around the state.
Skyview’s Jabari Marshall started at linebacker and Battle Ground’s Kevin Haynes started at defensive end for the East. Mountain View’s Bennett Masau played on the offensive line.
This might not be the last all-star football game for those locals. They are on the initial rosters for July’s Freedom Bowl Classic, which features recent graduates from Southwest Washington. That game is set for July 13 at Kiggins Bowl.
She’s still No. 1
Not that there was any doubt around here, but now Gatorade has named Camas sophomore Alexa Efraimson the female track and field athlete of the year for the state of Washington.
Efraimson won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in state meet record times, and had the second-fastest 1,600 time in the nation this year among high school competitors.
“She dictates a race just by stepping to the start line,” said Mark Ward, head coach of Central Kitsap, in a press release from Gatorade. “She is totally under control of every race I have seen her run and has the best range of any athlete at our level in the state.”
Gatorade has named a state best in track and field for 28 years. Efraimson is the second athlete from Clark County to take the honor. Brenda Bessner of Washington School for the Deaf was selected in 1988.
Efraimson is the second athlete from Clark County to be named state player of the year by Gatorade this spring. Skyview’s Carter Johnson was selected as the state’s top soccer player.
Team tennis player
Fresh off winning her second straight Class 4A state singles title, Skyview sophomore Sammi Hampton has been named to two United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest junior tennis teams.
Hampton is one of four girls on the 16s Intersectional team scheduled to travel to Shreveport, La., in early July, and is also one of six girls on the 18s National team going to Claremont, Calif., in late July.
The Intersectional Team Championships are played on clay between teams of the 17 sections of the USTA. Both events are the highest level of junior team competition held in the U.S.
