Girls softball teams from around the Northwest will be in Vancouver today through Sunday vying for spots in regional and national tournaments.
A total of 38 teams will compete for four berths in the Amateur Softball Association 16-and-younger A National Championship tournament. Games will be played at the Vancouver Girls Softball Association fields, at Hudson’s Bay High School and at Clark College.
First-round games in the double-elimination tournament start at noon today. The tournament concludes at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the VGSA fields at Salmon Creek County Park.
The Portland Metro ASA is staging the tournament.

Goalball event continues
The 2013 National Goalball Championships continue through Sunday at McLoughlin Middle School, 5802 MacArthur Blvd., in Vancouver.
Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by blind and visually impaired men and women.
The tournament is free for spectators, and volunteers are needed.
Competition is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
The event is hosted by the Vancouver-based Northwest Association for Blind Athletes.

Local solstice race starts at 6 p.m. Saturday
Part scavenger hunt, part footrace, the 2013 Summer Solstice Amazing Scavenger Race takes place at 6 p.m. today in Vancouver.
Open to teams and individual, the event covers a loop of about four miles that starts and ends outside Northwest Personal Training, 1011 Broadway in downtown Vancouver.
Along the route are 15 stations with mental and physical challenges that must be completed to get the clue for the location of the next station. Participants will have 90 minutes to complete the course.
The event, which benefits the Clark County Food Bank, includes a costume contest and a post-race street dance. Cost to enter is $60, $20 for ages 17 and younger.
