What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

Some guy wrote that Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania is so great that the USGA should play the U.S. Open there at least every 10, 15 years.
No thanks.
We understand there is history there, but the game needs to expand.
The U.S. Open should continue its recent trend of using public courses. Private courses can be too much of a reminder of golf’s exclusive past.
The game costs a lot of money anyway. But the sport has been trying the past 20 or so years to welcome in all walks of life, of trying to get the costs down so that more can enjoy the game.
Playing our nation’s tournament at a private course is not consistent with that message that the game is open for all.
We are looking forward to the 2015 U.S. Open in our great state, at a public facility — Chambers Bay.

Couple other reasons why the U.S. Open should not return to Merion:
• Those wicker baskets on top of the sticks are dumb.
• Pennsylvania is too far away for Phil Mickelson’s family. In a few years, he might be too old to fly to and from Merion in the middle of the week to watch his daughter get her wisdom teeth pulled, or something.
• Those wicker baskets on top of the sticks. Yeah, they’re still dumb. They are not clever. They are dumb.

We understand there were concerns with the financing. Many of us believe fighting against that strange entertainment tax was a good thing.
Still, we also think it would have been a lot of fun to watch minor league baseball in Vancouver on Monday night.
Instead, the team that could have been ours is in Hillsboro, Ore., wherever that is.
Baseball would have been a hit in Vancouver. But we still think most of the financing for a stadium for a privately owned team should be paid for with private money.
We just really wish a deal could have been made to make that our team, in our town.
