Local fifth-graders will have a dual role in Friday’s annual Flag Day Ceremony at the Fort Vancouver National Site.

The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Parade Ground bandstand across from the Grant House, 1101 Officers Row.

Dressed in 18th-century costumes, students from Vancouver’s Marshall Elementary will speak about the meaning of the flag from the perspective of the American Revolution. Students from Evergreen’s Sunset Elementary will challenge Clark County’s mayors to an American history quiz.

All students will then preside as judges for the fourth annual Mayors of Clark County Patriotic Tie Competition.

The Flag Day Ceremony also includes the annual National Pause for the Pledge, which will be led by U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jason Gonce.

The ceremony is presented by Veolia Water and organized by the Fort Vancouver National Trust.
