Weather Eye: We’ll cool off, and may see sprinkles, but nothing like last year

Sunday was about as typical we can get for a day in June, with a high of 73 and low of 53. The averages are 72 and 53 degrees. Monday was slightly coolers with overnight lows in the 40s in many locations. Weather observer Tyler Mode of Battle Ground saw 39.5 degrees early Monday.

Kind of unusual to see your breath in June, but cooler yet is the forecast for the remainder of the week as a trough of low pressure settles in. Moisture will be limited, but there will be some light showers. The Cascades and Olympics will see snowflakes above 5,000 feet or so.

The first 10 days of the month were warm and dry in Vancouver, with an average mean temperature of 65 degrees, about three degrees above average, and no measurable rainfall, about 3/4 of an inch below average. So, now it is our turn to be cool and damp weather for a while. Father’s Day weekend is still up in the air; we could see another trough settle in with clouds and a risk of showers or we could enjoy sunshine and seasonable temperatures.

Last June was cold and wet, with 3.47 inches of rain in Vancouver and an average mean temperature two degrees below average.

Jim Knoll of Orchards: “I ended up with 6.24 inches of rain last month, which makes it my third-wettest May in 18 years. I had 1.21 inches of rain on the 22nd and 1.41 inches of rain on the 23rd. Much of the 0.95 of an inch of rain that fell on the 27th fell in a 15-minute period when it rained as hard as I’ve ever seen it.”

Summer does start July 5, right? See you Thursday!
