Talking Points: Pacman never learns

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Gee, NFL players face the most harrowing dangers off the field.

Like Adam “Pacman” Jones, who recently demonstrated this peril as he claimed that he hit a woman only to defend himself.

On Monday, Jones, who plays cornerback for the Cincinnati Bengals, was charged with assault stemming from an incident that occurred last week. According to a Cincinnati TV news station, Jones is accused of striking a 34-year-old woman named Shannon Wesley “in the head during a verbal altercation.”

However, after turning himself in to authorities, Jones took to Twitter to explain his alleged act of self-defense.

“Just got arrested for protecting myself,” Jones wrote. “I will not let this break me or change what I have work (sic) so far.”

Jones faces an arraignment on Tuesday and soon it will be decided if he simply defended himself or made another bad decision. Since entering the league in 2005, Jones has been arrested at least eight times and served a suspension through the 2007 season for repeated violations of the NFL’s personal-conduct policy.

Another Trail Blazer great must now look for a new job.

On Monday, Lionel Hollins confirmed that the Memphis Grizzlies will not bring him back as head coach. Hollins, the Blazer legend whose No. 14 jersey number hangs in the Rose Garden, led the Grizzlies to their first Western Conference Finals this season.

Even after the success, Hollins met the same fate as Geoff Petrie in Sacramento.

Petrie — his No. 45 is also one of the many retired Blazer numbers — will not be retained as the Kings’ general manager after the NBA Draft.

Still, Hollins likely won’t spend too much time unemployed alongside Petrie. As a hot coaching candidate, Hollins has been liked with several job openings even before he parted ways with the Grizzlies.
