A Vancouver man appeared this morning in Clark County Superior Court on accusations he eluded police midarrest Wednesday morning, fleeing with one wrist still handcuffed.
Shane S. Chandra, 18, faces charges of second-degree escape and first-degree trespass at his June 20 arraignment.
He was held without bail because of a pre-existing warrant for arrest on suspicion of possession of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and opium. Attorney Susan Stauffer was appointed to defend him on the escape and trespass charges.
Clark County sheriff’s deputies searched for Chandra for six hours Wednesday after a resident called 911 early that morning to report a strange man sleeping in a car at the end of the resident’s driveway in La Center.
A sheriff’s deputy responded at about 8 a.m. at the home at 1010 N.E. 299th St. and learned Chandra had a felony warrant out for his arrest for multiple drug-possession allegations.
While the deputy fastened a handcuff on Chandra’s wrist, Chandra pushed away and wiggled out of the deputy’s grip. He fled with one wrist still handcuffed.
Chandra was seen running barefoot into a wooded area south of the East Fork of the Lewis River, leaving behind his slip-on sandals and his car.
Deputies, including a K-9 unit, searched the area until 2 p.m., when the agency suspended the search.
Around 6:15 p.m., another resident in a separate home on Northeast 299th Street encountered a scene reminiscent of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” — the suspect was sleeping in the resident’s bed.
Deputies, along with La Center and Ridgefield police officers, arrested the suspect, who was still sporting the handcuff from earlier. He was transported to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center for evaluation and was set to be booked into the Clark County Jail.
