Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center’s largest public event will take place this weekend, despite a closure on Interstate 5.
The hospital’s eighth annual Healthy Kids Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the hospital, 2211 N.E. 139th St.
The event coincides with the Washington State Department of Transportation’s closure of I-5 to install some large beams for a new overpass.
“WSDOT has been working with us for several months to plan for this closure, not just for regular hospital traffic but also to make sure our Healthy Kids Fair is not disrupted,” hospital spokesman Brian Willoughby said in a news release.

The Healthy Kids Fair is a free community event. The event will include more than 30 booths and activities offering information about children’s health and safety. Bike helmets will be available for $6. Child seat safety checks, to make sure safety seats are installed properly, will be available. People can also recycle damaged or out-of-use safety seats at the fair.
Vendors from the Salmon Creek Farmers Market will participate in the fair. Other activities include ambulance tours, drills for exiting a house during a fire, Germ City, face painting, surgical robot displays and a hands-on Surgi-Duck that allows children to “operate” on a stuffed duck.
The hospital is also holding a food drive to benefit one of its partners, the Children’s Center. The non
profit offers mental health counseling to uninsured and underinsured Clark County children. Visitors are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation.
Getting there
I-5 will be fully closed at the I-205 junction from 11 p.m. Friday, June 7, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 10
The northbound and southbound Interstate 205 exits at 134th Street will be open. People traveling to the hospital from central and west Vancouver will need to take state Highway 500, Mill Plain Boulevard or state Highway 14 to I-205, then travel north to the hospital.
Those who are traveling south on I-5 can take the 134th Street exit from I-205 or take the 179th Street (Fairgrounds) Exit off I-5 and drive surface streets to the hospital.
