The man found dead in a car that exploded last week in the VanMall neighborhood died by suicide, according to the Clark County Medical Examiner.

The body of Bogdan Sergeyevich Odynets, 23, of Vancouver was found in the 9100 block of Northeast 54th Street in the early hours of May 28 after he detonated an explosive device in his vehicle, the medical examiner reported. Odynets died of blunt head trauma.

A neighbor heard the explosion and called 911 about 3:30 a.m.

The street was cordoned off for most of the day as investigators from Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit; Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; FBI, and the Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit sifted through the scene.

According to court record, Odynets faced a charge of domestic violence stalking, an allegation investigated by the University of Washington Police. The charge was filed on Feb. 15 and he pleaded not guilty at his March 1 arraignment.

There was a pretrial hearing set for May 30, two days after Odynets died.
