RENTON — Seattle Seahawks receiver Percy Harvin tweeted Tuesday that he will need to have surgery on his injured hip.Harvin, a receiver who was the team’s key offensive offseason acquisition, was in New York getting a second opinion on his ailing hip while the Seahawks were practicing at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
After the practice, coach Pete Carroll said the team had nothing new to report on Harvin, who has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list since the team opened training camp on Thursday.
But later in the day, Harvin tweeted “when everything is goin good sometimes life throw u a curve ball… sorry to half to report that my injury will require surgery…”
Later, Harvin added in another tweet: “Nobody was more anxious and excited about season then….but I will be back strong as ever..i appreciate all the love and prayers 12th man.”
Carroll refuted after the practice reports that the Seahawks team doctors had made an earlier recommendation that Harvin did not need surgery, leading to Harvin seeking a second opinion.
“We are still gathering information,” Carroll said. “That’s not right because we haven’t made a conclusion, a conclusive statement about that yet. We are trying to wait it out and make sure we take all the time that’s available and all of the information, so whatever those reports were they weren’t correct.”
Carroll said that ultimately, the final decision on whether Harvin will have surgery will be Harvin’s.
“Eventually he has to say, ‘Yeah, I’m getting surgery or not.’ He has to OK that. But that’s all going to be with the information from the doctors, they are all working it out now and trying to get all the information. There is a lot of background work that we are doing here, too. But it will be doctor’s recommendation and of course the patient always gets the final shot.”
Seattle traded three picks, including its first-rounder in 2013, to Minnesota to get Harvin and then signed him to a six-year, $67 million contract that includes $25.5 million guaranteed.
Rice undergoes procedure in Switzerland
Another of Seattle’s high-priced receivers, Sidney Rice, was also “off-campus” Tuesday, the term Carroll likes to uses for players who aren’t in attendance.
Rice, in fact, was about as off-campus as can be, having headed to Switzerland to undergo a procedure on a muscle in his knee.
Carroll said he couldn’t offer a lot more detail but stressed that it was not an indication of a serious injury and simply Rice wanting to get some preventive work done on his knee.
“I’m not going to try to tell you what it is,” Carroll said. “This is way beyond my pay scale.”
Carroll said Rice will be gone for a couple of days but should return to practice when he’s back. He shouldn’t miss any preseason or regular-season games.
“He didn’t get hurt,” Carroll said. “We’re just trying to help him because we have something going that we think will help him, and I can’t tell you what it is because I’d make a mistake.”
Rice practiced during training camp before flying to Switzerland, although Rice had limited reps during practices.
Hawks cut Marshall, add Konz
After practice Tuesday, the team announced it had released tight end Victor Marshall and signed linebacker/tight end Jameson Konz.
Marshall, a native of Kirkland who attended Juanita High School, signed with Seattle as an undrafted rookie free agent out of British Columbia on May 13.
Konz was originally drafted by Seattle with the 245th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL draft. He spent 2010 on injured reserve and then played in one game in 2011 before suffering a knee injury and then being released last season.
