Columbia Little League defeated in regional opener

Columbia Little League’s first game in the Western Regional Senior Tournament didn’t go quite as planned.

Columbia’s all-star team in the 15-16 age group lost 10-0 Tuesday to Pearl City Little League of Hawaii.

Up next for Columbia is the Oregon representative in the eight-team tournament — Clackamas-Mountain View Little League. On Tuesday, Clackamas lost 17-0 to the Southern California representative, Manhattan Beach.

The Washington state champions, Columbia will play one game each day for seven days in Ontario, Calif. The top two teams at the end of the round-robin schedule will play on Aug. 6 for the regional title.

The team is seeking financial help to assist with the cost of lodging, meals and transportation during its week in California. Contact Anthony Barrett at 360-771-4874 to learn more.

13-year-old Babe Ruth — Hazel Dell Metro earned a 4-3 win over Meridian, Idaho in the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday in Centralia.

Daniel Copeland pitched seven innings to earn the win for Hazel Dell. Derek Gomez had a run and an RBI.

Hazel Dell will then play South Oregon at 2:15 p.m. today, Alberta at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, and round out pool play at 5 p.m. Friday against North Oregon.

Semifinals and final are Saturday and Sunday.
