Community notebook: Evergreen Storm relay team earns All-American status

A relay team from Vancouver placed sixth at the USA National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships.

The Evergreen Storm Track Team’s 4-by-800 relay boys team earned All-American status for its placing. Miguel De La Melena, Parker Wubbena, Hamilton Vuu and Sean Flynn finished with a time of 9 minutes, 11.29 seconds. The Storm team was the 12th seed out of 31 teams from around the nation. The time was their best by 10 seconds.

The meet took place July 22-28 in Greensboro, N.C.

De La Melena placed ninth in the 800 meters for boys 13-14 with a time of 2:07.51. He also was 11th in the 3,000 in 9:51.89 and 23rd in the 1,500 with a time 4:39.47.

Amanda Creagan placed 11th in the discus for girls 13-14 with a throw of 101 feet, 4 inches. She placed 20th in the shot put with a mark of 35-10.

In the boys 15-16 division, Bailey King placed 14th in the shot put with a mark of 46-1/2 inch. He was 19th in the discus at 143-6. In the girls 15-16 division, Nkem Day placed 34th in the shot put with a distance of 31-6.

In the girls 17-18 division, sprinter Danica Person had the 29th fastest time in the 100 meters (12.9 seconds). Her 200 time (25.35) was the 49th fastest.

Since 2009, when Scott Slamp founded the Evergreen Storm Track Team, the club has supported athletes from 21 different schools who have competed at the national Junior Olympics. The club has produced five national champions and 17 All-American performances. It has qualified more than 60 athletes for national competition.

Coaching the team this season were Mike McKinney (distance runners), Steve Dines (sprinters), Marinella Jiganie (hurdlers), Ann Mathews (high jumpers), Scott Halley (javelin) and Johanna Lawson (throws).

Calwell wins twice at Long Course

Kasey Calwell won two events to help the Columbia River Swim Team place fourth in points at the Oregon Swimming 13-and-older Long Course Championships.

In the division for boys 15 and older, Calwell won the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4 minutes, 43.95 seconds and won the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.26.

He also placed second in three events, the 100 breast (1:08.12), the 200 IM (2:12.22) and 100 freestyle (55.04).

Other CRST swimmers posting top-eight results were: Anna Panebianco, Eric Bugna, Andrew Chang, Maksim Dolbinin, Katherine Kaplan, James Nicorici, Julia Sanders, Tom Utas, Chris Xue, Darya Samiee, and Andrea Young. See the Community Sports Scoreboard for their results.

Downtown bike race draws hundreds

More than 200 cyclists took part in the Vancouver Courthouse Criterium, held on Sunday in downtown Vancouver.

Results from the ninth annual races, as posted by the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

Riders raced around an eight-turn course. There were nine classifications of races.

The event is a benefit for the Washington State School for the Blind. Top-level races counted toward season-long OBRA points competitions.

Teams place at futsal nationals

Two teams from the Vancouver-based Slavic Christian Academy placed in the under-8 age division at the U.S. National Futsal Championships, held July 18-21 in Long Beach, Calif.

Competing as the Vancouver Futsal Academy, the teams finished third and fifth overall in the 16-team tournament.

Futsal is a modified form of soccer played with five players on a side on a smaller field, typically indoors.

Vancouver Futsal Academy Red finished with two wins and two losses and fell 8-6 in the semifinals to finish sharing third place. Vancouver Futsal Academy Blue went 1-2, losing 3-1 in the quarterfinals.

The Vancouver Futsal Academy formed in 2010. The coach is Dmitry Dauksh.
