A Portland bicyclist was seriously injured Saturday near Milwaukie, Ore., after he crashed into a Vancouver truck driver’s tractor-trailer rig at a stop light, according to the Oregon State Police.
The crash occurred about 9:30 a.m. on Oregon Highway 224. The bicyclist, Lawrence Mascotte, 71, was riding west on the paved highway shoulder when his bicycle had a mechanical failure and crashed into the trailer of a truck that was stopped at a traffic signal near Southeast Johnson Road.
Mascotte fell under the trailer, but a witness pulled his vehicle in front of the truck to keep it from moving. The truck’s driver, Craig Johnson, 58, of Vancouver was not aware of the collision, the OSP said.
The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to OHSU Hospital with serious injuries. He remained in serious condition Saturday evening.
The OSP said the accident is still under investigation and that no enforcement action has been taken.
