Community notebook: 19-year-old wins local triathlon

It took Marco Ramirez just longer than an hour to complete the fifth edition of the Girlfriends and Dudes Triathlon on Sunday at Frenchman’s Bar Park.

The 19-year-old completed the half-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3-mile run in 1 hour, 1 minute and 35 seconds. Leading a field of 265 athletes across the finish line, Ramirez was 1:13 ahead of runner-up Andy Enser, 33. Trevor Hayward, who has won this race multiple times, finished third in 1:04:20.

Holly Henderson, 26, won the women’s triathlon with a time of 1:14. She finished 26 seconds ahead of 48-year-old Sheila Donahoe and 54 seconds ahead of 48-year-old Leslie Beard.

Race organizer Sherri McMillan of Northwest Personal Training — who was the sixth fastest woman in the triathlon — estimated that the event raised at least $3,200 for Children’s Center. Children’s Center provides mental and emotional health assistance to children and families in Clark County.

Swimmer qualifies for U.S. Open meet

Julia Sanders qualified for the U.S. Open Swimming Championships during the USA Swimming Long Course Western Senior Sectionals, which took place Tuesday through Saturday at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

Swimming for Vancouver’s Columbia River Swim Team, Sanders qualified for nationals with her fourth-place time of 26.39 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle.

Also scoring for CRST at the sectional meet was Kasey Calwell, who placed 16th in the 200 individual medley (2:11.15) and 16th in the 400 individual medley (4:42.93).

Sanders, Anna Panebianco, Andrea Young and Katherine Kaplan teamed up to place ninth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.46).

Konkright, Pedigo are county golf champs

Spencer Konkright of Ridgefield won the boys division and Ashley Pedigo, a Skyview student, was the girls champion at the Clark County Junior Golf Tournament last week.

The modified Stableford tournament, a first-time event, was played over two days at Tri-Mountain Golf Course and Club Green Meadows and featured high school golfers from the county.

Konkright won the boys title with 37 points. Cory Smeltzer of Ridgefield was second with 25 points and Tyler Betcher of Battle Ground was third at 24.

Pedigo beat out her sister Aylexie Pedigo 53-44. Erin Morse of Battle Ground was third at 21.

Camas softball team wins state title

Something Special of Camas won the Washington 16U-A Amateur Softball Association Fastpitch State Championship, finishing the three-day tournament in Yakima with an 8-1 record.

The title qualifies Something Special to play in the 16-U ASA National Championships, July 29-Aug. 6 in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Something Special had to win six consecutive games on July 14 to capture the title. In the championship round, Something Special defeated Elite Softball twice. First, the Camas team prevailed 8-7 to force a winner-take-all championship game. Something Special won that game 3-2 in nine innings.

Three win events at Track City meet

Three members of the Evergreen Storm Track Team won events during the Track City International Classic meet on July 14 in Eugene, Ore.

Gabe Dinnel won the 3,000 meters for boys ages 11-12 with a time of 10 minutes, 41.33 seconds. Peyton Fredrickson won the high jump for boys ages 17-18 with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches. Bailey King won the discus for boys ages 15-16 with a mark of 138 feet.

Local fighters win

Three Fisticuffs fighters were won during an amateur mixed martial arts and boxing show held Saturday in Vancouver.

Boxer Auston Dunn and MMA fighters Carlos Elizondo and Stephan Chang were home gym winners during the event at Fisticuffs Gym.

Golf tourney benefits scholarship

The eighth-annual Our Three Moms Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday at Club Green Meadows.

The tournament is a primary funding source for the Our Three Moms Scholarship Foundation, which awards college money to Vancouver students from single-parent homes.

Cost to play is $125, which includes lunch, golf, range balls and prizes. The shotgun start is at 1 p.m. Check-in and lunch start at 11:30 a.m.

Ashley Corral’s hoops camp is next week

Ashley Corral’s Basketball Camp for boys and girls entering grades 6-12 will be held July 29-31 at Clark College. Cost is $100, with the camp running 5-8 p.m.

Corral is a former USC and Prairie High School basketball player. She will be joined by other college and professional players.

Golf fundraiser set for hockey association

A golf tournament to benefit the Vancouver Youth Hockey Association is planned for Aug. 5 at Tri-Mountain Golf Course.

The four-player scramble tournament will start with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and be followed by lunch.

Cost is $90 per player, $360 per team of four players. Money raised will help cover ice time and travel costs for Vancouver teams of players ages 10-14.

Union grad MVP of game

Union grad Caleb Whalen was named MVP of the California Collegiate League All-Star Game July 17.

Whalen will be a junior at the University of Portland this fall. He is batting .356 through 35 games.
