A Multnomah County, Ore., sheriff’s river patrol boat has recovered a body from the Columbia River near the Interstate 5 Bridge.

The recovery was made Thursday evening after the adult man’s body was spotted by the passing crew of a Tidewater tug and barge around 5:45 p.m.

The crew called 911, and the Portland Fire Bureau was the first on the scene. The body was eventually recovered about a quarter-mile downstream of the bridge, according to a news release.

The body was taken to the Multnomah County medical examiner for identification and investigation. No name was released.

On Friday, July 12, a woman and her granddaughter were enjoying the afternoon on the beach at Vancouver’s Wintler Park, upstream of the I-5 Bridge, when they saw a man enter the water, swim far out into the channel, and then disappear.

Authorities searched the river and its banks for a possible drowning victim, but were unable to locate the swimmer, whom the witnesses identified as an adult.
