Community notebook: Local athlete wins taekwondo gold

Jackson Braunschweig of Vancouver Taekwondo Academy won a gold medal at the United States Junior and Senior National Taekwondo Championships, which took place July 2-8 in Chicago.

Braunschweig won all four of his matches to take first place in sparring competition for age 10-11 lightweight red belts.

Other Vancouver Taekwondo athletes who competed at the national championships were Kamlen Singsit, Lucas Braunschweig and Lane Bentley. None of them advanced to medal rounds. Bentley who competed for his first time as an adult.

Columbia River swimmers win gold

Five swimmers from the Columbia River Swim Team won titles at the Oregon State Games, held over the weekend at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham.

John Utas won three races for boys ages 15-18, the 100-meter breaststroke (1 minute, 16.39 seconds), 100 freestyle (57.23), and 50 freestyle (25.97). In the 13-14 age division, Tom Utas won the 100 breaststroke (1:18.84), the 100 freestyle (1:01.55) and the 50 freestyle (28.11).

Also in the boys 15-18 division, Josh Risley won the 200 breaststroke (2:56.49) and Max Urbanek won the 200 backstroke (2:30.37).

In the girls 13-14 division, Katherine Kaplan won the 560 freestyle (28.63).

Several Columbia River swimmers placed at the Oregon Swimming 12-and-under Long Course Championships in Albany, including Dominic Colletto who won the 8-year-old boys 50 backstroke (45.02).

Showtime Baseball wins title

Kordell Vasbinder pitched a complete game, and Austin Cline had two RBI as Showtime Baseball’s Junior Prep team won the U.S. Specialty Sports 16-and-younger Washington state baseball championship.

Showtime beat Crimson Rock from the Seattle area 6-5 in the title game, which was played on July 9 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.

Parker Randle had two of Showtime’s five hits, including a double, and scored a run. Josh Palmquist, Liam Fitzpatrick and Chase Lariza also had RBI.

Wahlen on all-star team in California league

University of Portland infielder Caleb Wahlen was named to the California Collegiate League All Star Game this week.

The Union High grad is playing summer ball for the Los Angeles Brewers, one of eight teams in the CCL. The league uses wooden bats and aims to further the development of professional prospects.

As a sophomore, Wahlen started 51 of 53 games this season for Portland. He batted .245 and tied for second on the team with 20 runs.

Triathlon on Sunday at Frenchman’s Bar Park

More than 350 triathletes are expected to take part in the Girlfriends and Dudes Triathlon on Sunday at Frenchman’s Bar Park.

Participants will swim a half-mile with the Columbia River current along the shoreline, bike 12.5 miles and finish with a 3.1-mile run. The first wave of competitors will start at 9 a.m.

The Children’s Center, which provides mental health services for children and families in Clark County, is the charity that benefits from this event.

In addition to the triathlon, adults can enter a duathlon. There is a short triathlon for kids following the main event. To register or learn more, visit www.nwpersonaltraining.com.

MMA show Saturday at Vancouver gym

Fisticuffs Gym in Vancouver will host an amateur mixed martial arts show on Saturday.

Chance Gabriel of Fisticuffs Gym challenges Stephen Wing of Redneck Militia in the main event, a 135-pound match. The show will feature fighters from a variety of area gyms.

Tickets cost $25 in advance at Fisticuffs Gym, $30 at the door. Ages 6-12 get in for $10. Fisticuffs Gym is at 7710 N.E. Fourth Plain Blvd.

McChesney latest winner in 5K series

Jesse McChesney of Vancouver won the July 10 installment of the Clark County Running Club’s series of 5-kilometer runs. He finished more than a minute ahead of the runner up, with a time of 16 minutes and 37 seconds across the Evergreen High School cross country course, where 104 runners completed.

The series shifts to Lacamas Lake Park for runs on July 17 and July 24. These races start at 7 p.m. with registration at 6:30. Cost is $2. Details at www.ccrunning.org.

Rowing program available for veterans

Disabled veterans are invited to take part in a dragon boat and paddling program on Vancouver Lake. This free program for ages 18 and older takes place at the Vancouver Lake Crew, 8612 N.W. Erwin O. Rieger Memorial Hwy.

The program runs 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesdays through Aug. 28, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug. 25. To learn more, visit www.dvwsp.org.

Basketball, volleyball camps scheduled

Registration is open for the Union Titan Boys Basketball Camp, which runs Aug. 5-8. The camp is for any boy entering grades 3-6. The camp costs $105, and tuns 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for each of the four days.

• The Cardinal Volleyball Camp is accepting registration for its sessions in mid-August at St. Joseph’s School in Vancouver. The camp is for girls and boys entering grades 3-8.
