Firefighters battled a grass fire that grew to about 400 feet along a fence line on Hayden Island late Monday night.
Portland Fire & Rescue responded to 3000 N. Hayden Island Drive at 11:32 p.m. and had to call for additional resources to help stop the ground-level blaze. The Vancouver Fire Department had one engine respond to the incident.
Because there were no hydrants close by, fire agencies set up a shuttle operation by loading engines with water tanks. Crews also used specialized wildland firefighting equipment, such as lightweight fire hose, to extinguish the fire.
The fire was brought under control at 12:11 a.m. today, and crews remained on scene to extinguish any hot spots.
There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
