Kevin Coombs got the call on July 1, and after Thursday’s first round, the general manager and golf pro at Green Mountain Golf Course finds himself in the hunt at the U.S. Senior Open in Omaha.
He shot a 1-under-par and is two shots behind a pack of leaders at 3-under.
Coombs, a Camas resident, was a first alternate coming out of qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open and got in field when the winner of the AT&T Championship wasn’t at least 50 years old.
Since then, Coombs has been providing great insight into his experience through his blog at http://kevin2013ussenioropen.blogspot.com.
He also made the experience a family affair with son Connor working as his caddie.

Former Portland Trail Blazer Greg Oden might have been the greatest franchise disappointment of the past 10 years but nothing — and we mean nothing — compares to his recent behavior.
Oden, apparently, digs Justin Bieber.
The website Busted Coverage posted tweets from fans who spotted the 7-footer at a recent Bieber show in Indianapolis. Having bad knees, that’s excusable. Being a Bieber fan without having a tween daughter, that’s just craziness.
Oden is still trying to find a home in the NBA and on Thursday, an ESPN report identified Dallas as a potential suitor. We wish Oden the best in his comeback. May he fit in with a team and begin listening to grown-up music.

It’s times like this when the Los Angeles Lakers probably wish that Ron Artest had kept his former name.
On Thursday, the L.A. brass looked like the bad guys with headlines like: “Lakers Amnesty World Peace.”
What’s next, Lakers? Waiving Hopes and Dreams? Firing The Pursuit of Happiness?
The good news for Metta World Peace is that per NBA rules, the Lakers must still pay the remainder of his $7.7 million salary. With that money, here’s to hoping that he heads back to a courthouse and changes his name again.
