Vancouver gymnast Jordan Chiles posted the high all-around score during her session of the American Classic meet on Sunday at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center in Huntsville, Texas.
A 12-year-old who trains at Naydenov Gymnastics in Vancouver, Chiles posted an all-around score of 54.750 that was the best in the first session of junior competition. Her all-around score was the third best among all junior competitors, and qualifies Chiles to compete in the 2013 USA Gymnastics national championship event.
The P&G Gymnastics Championships will take place Aug. 15-18 at Hartford, Conn. The American Classic is one of three elite meets scheduled prior to the national championships. Chiles also will compete at the U.S./Secret Classic on July 27 in Chicago and then attend a national training camp in Texas.
Chiles, who is entering seventh grade at Pleasant Valley Middle School, is eligible to compete in elite meets because she qualified in March as a USA Gymnastics Junior International Elite gymnast.
In her session at the American Classic, Chiles took first place on the vault with a score of 15.0. That was the second best vault score among all junior competitors.
In her session, she placed second on the balance beam (13.70), third on the uneven parallel bars (13.25) and tied for eighth place on floor exercise (12.80).
