What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

The Hazel Dell Little League senior baseball team (players ages 15-16) qualified for the state tournament here in Vancouver.
Hunter Graham pitched a no-hitter against Glenwood on Saturday in the district championship, winning 12-0. From an email report sent to The Columbian, Taylor Packer hit a triple, Jeff Finely hit two doubles and a single, and Graham hit a double.
The victory meant a lot to the team, so much so they dedicated the victory to friend and Skyview student Kaitlin Miller, 17, who died last week from injuries in an auto accident.
The Hazel Dell team will carry Kaitlin’s memory to the state tournament, which begins July 13 at Cascade Little League.

On the same day his brother Steve made news when he was traded from the Dodgers organization to the Marlins, Skyview High grad Jeff Ames made baseball news of his own.
Jeff Ames, a Tampa Bay Rays pitching prospect with the Class A Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League, threw five scoreless innings on Saturday in a 1-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnets. In the process, Ames set a team record with 24 consecutive scoreless innings pitched.
The record he broke was teammate’s Taylor Guerrieri’s current streak.
“I didn’t even know (I broke the record). I didn’t know that (Guerrieri) was on a streak,” Ames told MiLB.com. “I had no idea that I broke it, either. Someone just told me, ‘Hey, that’s your 24th straight scoreless inning.’ “
Ames improved his record to 7-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.96.
“The key to it is having a good defense behind me. If they’re not making plays, I don’t even have a chance,” Ames said.
