Ridgefield — A loosened guard rail has prompted the Washington State Department of Transportation to reduce the speed limit on a section of state Highway 501 outside Ridgefield. The change took effect Friday.

The speed limit between North Reiman Road and North Smythe Road (mileposts 18.0 to 18.2) has been reduced from 40 mph to 25 mph in both directions. The move is intended to protect driver safety in a section of road where saturated soils have loosened the guard rail along the eastbound lane, according to WSDOT.

The speed reduction will remain in effect until crews complete permanent repairs early this year, according to WSDOT.
