DuChesne hit Drey with a perfect “home run” pass to go over the Bay defense for a layup and a four-point lead. The Eagles made a 3-pointer just before the final horn to make it a one-point contest.
While Mountain View got the win, the Thunder were not exactly thrilled with their performance.
Both coaches were impressed with the Eagles, though.
“Bay played very, very hard. They played harder than we did,” Mountain View coach Nate DuChesne said. “Bay deserves a lot of credit, and I thought they deserved to win this game tonight.”
Mountain View post Shane McCauley, who had 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, said Bay’s defensive pressure got to the Thunder in the final 13 minutes of the game. He was relieved to escape with the victory, but like his coach, was not happy with how it went down.
“A win is a win, but if you don’t get better after a game, what’s the win for?” McCauley asked.
Well, it does count in the standings. Mountain View imroved to 2-1 in a six-team league that has seen every team win at least once already.
Bay, a team that is improving under first-year coach Robert Key, was also looking for its second league win.
Key said he appreciates the effort his players gave in that final push.
“These kids are relentless,” Key said. “In the first half, we had a lot of miscues. Our goal in the second half was, let’s turn it up and win the second half. The third and fourth quarter, they kept playing. That’s all I can ask for.”
T.J. Brumfield led the Eagles with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Akash Sanghera scored all 10 of his points in the first half, helping Mountain View to a 26-15 lead. Alex Torson scored eigh of his 10 in the second half, in an effort to hold off the Eagles.
Drey ended up with 10, as well. The last two were the biggest.
Bay’s Jomarri Gable hit a turnaround jumper with 12 seconds left to make it 43-41. After a timeout, Drey broke free and Luke DuChesne hit him in stride with the long pass for the layup.
“Coach asked who wants the ball,” Drey said. “I asked for the ball to be in my hands.”
“That’s always an option, the home-run play,” Nate DuChesne said. “Our guys executed it.”
