The Hockinson boys basketball team led sixth-ranked Mark Morris for most of the first half, but the Monarchs hit some big shots in the second half to pull out a 65-57 win in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League opener for both teams.

Hockinson led 31-24 late in the second quarter before Tanner Brill hit a last-second 3-pointer to cut the lead to four.

Brill opened the third quarter with another 3-pointer to cut the margin to one. Mark Morris held a 22-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take control.

“I think their physicality wore us down a little bit in the second half,” Hockinson coach Matt Gruhler said. “I think they had six baskets off rebounds in the second half, and they hit 5 of 6 3-pointers over a stretch of third and fourth quarters to seal the deal.”

Wyatt Yearout had six points and six rebounds. Jack Klodt converted 10 of 11 free throws on his was to scoring 21 points for the Hawks (6-7, 0-1).

“I think coming in and playing with the No. 6 team in the state for 29 of 32 minutes is something we can build on as we start league,” Gruhler said. “But it’s easy to get up to play Mark Morris at their place. We need to come out with that same intensity in every league game.”
