Where they stand: At 51-11-1-2, the Winterhawks have the Western Hockey League’s best record and 101 points from 61 games. Edmonton (91 points in 61 games) and Kelowna (88 points in 61 games) and have the next-best marks.
Winterhawks ranked No. 2: This week, Portland is ranked No. 2 in the Canadian Hockey League top-10. The Halifax Mooseheads (49-6-2-1) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League are ranked first. Announced each Wednesday, the top-10 is selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts. Edmonton (fourth), Kelowna (fifth) and Kamloops (10th) are WHL clubs also in the top 10.
Meet players in Vancouver: From 5-8 p.m. on Monday, several Winterhawks players will be at the Burgerville at 7401 E. Mill Plain Blvd. Players will be there in two one-hour shifts, 5:30-6:30 p.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. There will be door prizes and the Winterhawks Booster Club will be there with photos, buttons and membership opportunities. Among the players expected to attend include goalie Brendan Burke and forwards Keegan Iverson and Dominic Turgeon. Ten percent of Burgerville sales during the event will be donated to the Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association Education Fund.
Booster club news: The Winterhawks Booster Club will donate a record $10,000 to the education fund, according to club president Stuart Kemp. The check will be presented at an upcoming home game. Forward Joe Mahon and the booster club are donating up to $1,500 for new equipment at Mountain View Ice Arena in Vancouver.
Mucha an all-star: Former Winterhawks goalie Kurtis Mucha was named a Canada West University first-team all-star in his third season at the University of Alberta.
Vancouver Vipers
This week: The Vipers wrap up the season with games at 7:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Bellingham.
Last week: Lost 3-0 to Bellingham in the final home game of the season.
Where they stand: At 2-36, Vancouver is last in the six-team Northern Pacific Hockey League. The Vipers have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Playoff picture: West Sound, Eugene and Bellingham have locked up playoff spots, with the Tri-City Outlaws and Glacier Nationals competing for the final NORPAC playoff spot.
