Chico State University freshman Alistair Docherty shot holes in one on back-to-back days at Cal State San Bernardino’s Coyote Classic tournament this week at San Bernardino, Calif.
The Union High School graduate aced the par-3 10th hole at Arrowhead Country Club from 205 yards against the wind just before Monday’s second round was called because of darkness.
During two rounds of play Tuesday, Docherty holed out on the par-3, 197-yard 4th hole.
Wildcats coach T.L. Brown tweeted a photo Tuesday of Docherty holding up two fingers to celebrate his aces — pic.twitter.com/2JE5JT3W5z — with the tweet: “Freshman wonder-boy Alistair Docherty just aces #4 to make his second hole in one of the tournament!”
Docherty carded a 7-over 77 for the first round, then finished with back-to-back 73s for a 13-over par 223 total, 23rd in the individual standings. That was third on the Wildcats, two strokes behind the team leaders, as Chico State placed sixth in the 16-team event.
Malychewski returns to wrestling regionals
Pacific University junior wrestler Caleb Malychewski is among those who will be competing for the Boxers in the NCAA Division III West Regional Tournament on Saturday at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
The Camas High School graduate was ranked No. 9 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings at 184 pounds, the first time in his collegiate career he has been ranked.
He enters the regional with a 28-7 record, with 17 wins by major decision or better, and already the most wins for a Pacific wrestler since Nick Locke won 31 in 2007-08.
Malychewski placed fourth at 174 pounds at last year’s regional as a freshman. He was twice one match away from advancing to nationals, but lost by fall in both the semifinals and third palace match.

SPU’s Decker qualifies for NCAA-II nationals
Lynelle Decker of Seattle Pacific University will be competing in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division II indoor track and field championships March 7-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
The Mountain View High School graduate had been on the verge of a provisional time all season, with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 16 seconds flat, and needing a 2:15.79 to qualify.
With one final try in the SPU Last Chance Qualifier last Saturday, she ran 2:13.64.
“Lynelle and I sat down before indoor started, and I said I expected her to qualify for the national meet this season,” SPU head coach Karl Lerum said. “I don’t know if she necessarily saw herself (qualifying) at that point. That Last Chance meet was kind of a breakthrough for her.”
Johnson, Price named NWAACC All-West
Clark College basketball players Dominique Johnson and Sean Price were named Western Division All-Stars by the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges.
Toni Doroha was named to the Second Team and Ashlie Nguyen to the All-Defensive Team.
Johnson, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Beaverton, Ore., is a graduate of Southridge High School. She averages 21.0 points, 4.0 assists, 3.47 steals and 3.35 rebounds a game for the Penguins, who are playing in the NWAACC championship tournament starting Saturday.
Price, a 6-4 sophomore, is a graduate of Columbia River High School. He averaged 20.92 points, 7.42 rebounds 3.33 assists and 1.08 steals a game.
Doroha, a freshman, and Nguyen, a sophomore, are graduates of Westview High School in Beaverton.
From Clark County high schools, Yakima Valley freshman Angelique Williams (Union High) was named to the women’s Eastern Division First Team and Portland Community College freshman Warren Edmondson (Evergreen High) was named to the Southern Region All-Defensive Team.
Forgette, Eagles top charity fundraiser
Eastern Washington guard Steven Forgette helped the Eagles football team win the award as the top fundraising school at Saturday’s Polar Plunge at Liberty Lake near Spokane.
The Heritage High School graduate and linebacker Ronnie Hamlin led a group of about 20 EWU football players that helped raise approximately $700 for Special Olympics.
The Polar Plunge required participants to jump into the frigid waters of Liberty Lake and wade out about 20 yards. It is a fundraising effort organized by law enforcement agencies throughout the state benefiting Special Olympics Washington.
“I appreciate our student-athletes and staff helping the community, and this is just another great example,” praised EWU athletic director Bill Chaves.
Simpson’s Varsek named All-CalPac
Simpson University guard Guy Varsek was named to the All-California Pacific Conference First Team for men’s basketball.
The Camas High School graduate, a 6-foot-5 junior, was second in the CalPac in scoring (16.07 points a game) and third in rebounding (6.63 a game).
He was also second with 77 3-point field goals during the 2012-13 season, and was fourth in shooting percentage (0.400, 169 of 422) and fifth in 3-point shooting percentage (0.345, 77 of 223).
WWU’s Guenther academic all-star
Western Washington University freshman cross country runner Taylor Guenther was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-Star for NCAA Division II.
The Prairie High School graduate carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.61, and is interested in majoring in either psychology or physical education.
Turner, Bruins garner USTFCCCA honor
George Fox University’s women’s cross country team was named an NCAA Division III All-Academic Team for the 2012 season by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or higher. The GFU women posted an aggregate GPA of 3.58.
Hudson’s Bay High School graduate Alyssa Turner was a redshirt sophomore on the Bruins’ squad last fall.
