Leadership development conference set
The Southwest Washington Red Cross Youth Council will share its collective knowledge with middle and high school students during the sixth annual Leadership Development Conference Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10 at Camas High School, 26900 S.E. 15th St.
In addition to team building exercises, Youth Council members will lead seminars on a number of topics including team empowerment, selfless leadership, goal planning and reaching objectives, conflict management, club dynamics and management, and leadership qualities.
In addition, each participant will be trained in either first aid or CPR by Red Cross youth instructors.
This event is open to all local middle and high school students. The cost is $30 for the entire weekend.
Each participant will receive a T-shirt and lunch both days.
The conference is sponsored by Quantum Residential, Inc., in Vancouver.

Student named to dean’s list
Quynh-Anh Vu of Camas, a freshman at the College of Arts and Sciences at Creighton University, was named to the fall dean’s list for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Full-time students who earn at least a 3.5 GPA are eligible for the list.
Local student wins Scholastic award
Thirty-four St. Mary’s Academy students have been honored with regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. St. Mary’s garnered 66 art accolades for 19 students and 22 writing awards for 15 students.
Four writing entries and 24 pieces of artwork, including one from Emilie Pate of Camas, received the highest distinction of a gold key.
Those submissions will go on to be judged at the national level.
Overall, 46 St. Mary’s students entered 158 individual pieces and four portfolios in the 2013 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The awards are one of the country’s most prestigious and long-standing programs recognizing youth. Past winners include famed artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein and Cy Twombly and writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates.
BIA accepting scholarship applications
The Building Industry Association (BIA) of Clark County is accepting applications for academic scholarships.
The Building Futures Foundation, the educational foundation for the BIA, has promoted public education, student scholarships and environmentally sensitive building practices in the building industry since 2002, according to a press release.
Scholarships will be awarded to qualified students pursuing an education in the building, construction and real estate trades at an accredited college, university or trade institution.
Selection criteria are financial need, academic relationship to the building industry, community service, grade point average and quality of application submitted.Applications, due by April 15, are available online at www.biaofclarkcounty.org.
Clark College students to perform ‘Rent’
Clark College Theatre presents the musical “Rent” March 1 and 2, and March 7 and 9 at the Decker Theater, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.
Ticket prices are $10 for alumni, $12 for senior citizens and $15 for general admission.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. on all dates except an additional 2 p.m. matinee on March 2.
