The team with players from Southwest Washington came up just short — twice — of winning the first Winterhawks Varsity Hockey championship.

Team South beat Team North twice to capture the league championship, winning the title in a shootout on Sunday at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton.

Both teams will represent the first-year league in the four-team Oregon High School Hockey state tournament. The state tournament will be played on Saturday and Sunday at the Winterhawks Skating Center.

Team North came within seconds of clinching the championship on Wednesday. Team South scored the tying goal with 10 seconds left and then won in a shootout that sent the league playoffs to a deciding game on Sunday.

Again, it came down to a shootout after the teams played to a 7-7 tie through three periods and a five-minute overtime. Again, Team South prevailed.

Columbia River High School’s Logan Anderson had four goals and two assists in Sunday’s deciding game. Union’s Alex Stoneham had a goal and two assists.Jake Morgan of Skyview and Tristian Swanson from Kelso also scored goals for Team North. Adding assists were Jimmy Scott of Union, Caleb Collins of Washougal and Justin Bernstein of Columbia River.
