Try This: Riding into romance

The third annual Washington State Horse Expo will feature clinics, fashion shows, demonstrations and performances by horses. With an emphasis on equine education, the event will feature national experts, trainers, health and wellness resources, vendors and activities. Show highlights include the Extreme Cowboy Race, as well as musical performances by Carrie Cunningham and the Six Shooters, the BlackPearl Friesian Dance Troupe and presenter Julie Goodnight.

When: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Admission: $10, $8 for seniors and children 7 to 12, free for children younger than 7. $6 for parking. Three-day passes: $24, $20 for seniors and youth.

2) Symphony shows heart

The Vancouver Symphony helps extend the romance of Valentine’s Day with its concert titled “Love Notes to Melissa.” The concert is dedicated to conductor Salvador Brotons’ wife, Dr. Melissa Brotons. The performance will feature guest soprano Coral Walterman, who has appeared with opera companies and orchestras throughout the region.

When: 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Sunday.

3) Embracing past and present

In honor of Black History Month, the Serendipity Players present the two-act play “In White America” by Martin Duberman, with additional narratives by local storytellers. The performance traces the history of African-Americans from the country’s founding to the events of school desegregation. Local storytellers will complete the production with personal stories about growing up in the African-American community.

When: 7:30 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

4) Pairing up for Valentines

On the annual Clark County Wine and Chocolate Tour, participants have a chance to try different chocolates and wine varieties from 13 Clark County wineries. Each winery will offer different wine varieties ranging from pinot noir to tempranillo. Chocolate-themed events, such as couture cupcake tasting by Haute Cakes at Three Brothers Winery, chocolatiers demonstrating their craft at Rusty Grape Winery, and truffle tasting with free photographs at English Estate Winery, will be available.

5) Dark southern charm

Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich) is longing to escape his small Southern town when he meets the mysterious Lena (Alice Englert). She descends from a local family of magic casters, and she must choose a light or dark path by her 16th birthday. But Lena would rather embrace a normal adolescence and budding romance with Ethan. “Beautiful Creatures” is rated PG-13.
