The Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge will offer a pair of volunteer opportunities this Saturday.
Participants can either plant shrubs with the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership, or tackle maintenance work on more than 20,000 existing plants along Gibbons Creek. Some trees and shrubs have been blown over in recent winds, and need to be set upright before the spring, according to the refuge.
The work will happen between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday. Volunteers should bring water, gloves and weather-appropriate clothing, according to the refuge.
The refuge is located just east of Washougal, but the main entrance off state Highway 14 was closed due to a wildfire in October. Visitors can still reach the refuge from the south end by driving south on 32nd Street into the Camas/Washougal Industrial Park, then turning left and following the road along the Columbia River dike. Parking is available just east of the caretaker house along that road.
