The Atlanta Braves have decided to reverse course and not use the “screaming savage” caricature of a Native American on their batting practice caps. Instead, they will use their familiar letter “A” in neoclassical Atlanta Braves script.
The “A” never offended anyone, unlike the culturally insensitive caricature. The mohawked image first made an appearance in 1954 during the Braves’ Milwaukee days and was part of Atlanta’s logo from 1967 to 1989.
Team president John Schuerholz insisted the screaming savage logo was one of five proposed designs and that a decision had not been made before the potential hats were leaked.
But it appears there’s some verbal backpedaling going on, since the screaming guy cap appeared in at least one sporting goods catalog, according to Yahoo! sports.
