Talking Points: Braves make ‘A’ good decision

The Atlanta Braves have decided to reverse course and not use the “screaming savage” caricature of a Native American on their batting practice caps. Instead, they will use their familiar letter “A” in neoclassical Atlanta Braves script.

The “A” never offended anyone, unlike the culturally insensitive caricature. The mohawked image first made an appearance in 1954 during the Braves’ Milwaukee days and was part of Atlanta’s logo from 1967 to 1989.

Team president John Schuerholz insisted the screaming savage logo was one of five proposed designs and that a decision had not been made before the potential hats were leaked.

But it appears there’s some verbal backpedaling going on, since the screaming guy cap appeared in at least one sporting goods catalog, according to Yahoo! sports.

Only 10 weeks now to the NFL draft on April 27 and most mock drafts have changed a bit following the post season all-star games.

Talking Points looked at several of them, finding Sporting News’ predictions the most interesting. They include Kansas City taking West Virginia QB Geno Smith with the No. 1 pick because the Chiefs are so desperate for a quarterback.

Other interesting predictions are Arizona taking USC quarterback Matt Barkley at No. 7, New Orleans grabbing Oregon outside linebacker Dion Jordan at No. 15 and Manti Te’o slipping to Cincinnati at No. 21.

This mock draft has the Seahawks taking BYU defensive end Ezekiel Ansah to be a pass-rushing bookend to Bruce Irvin. Sporting News calls Ansah “raw with tantalizing skills.”
