Columbia River High School senior Logan Anderson scored the first four goals for Team North on Saturday, leading it to a 5-4 win over Team East in a Winterhawks Varsity Hockey playoff game at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton.
The win moves the team — which includes players from Southwest Washington — within one victory of the first Winterhawks Varsity Hockey championship. Team North will play Team South at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. A win on Wednesday would clinch the title for Team North.
If Team South wins on Wednesday, the teams will play again on Sunday to determine the champion. Both Team North and Team South have qualified for the Oregon high school hockey championships, which will include teams from Eugene and Medford and be played Feb. 23-24 at the Winterhawks Skating Center.
Anderson’s first two goals on Saturday were unassisted. Justin Bernstein from Columbia River assisted on two goals, and Jimmy Scott of Union had one assist.
The fifth goal was scored by Kelso’s Tristian Swanson.
Prior to the game, the team’s seniors were honored. Among Team North’s seniors are Anderson, Caleb Collins (Washougal), Jacob Bishop (Prairie) and Jake Morgan (Skyview).
Youth soccer team falls in state semifinals
The Vancouver Timbers boys under-18 team lost in the semifinals of the Washington Youth Soccer State Championship on Saturday.
Pacific Northwest Maroon beat the Timbers 2-1 on Saturday at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
Jake McAllister scored the goal for Vancouver late in the match. Pacific Northwest scored its goals midway through the second half.
Other players for the Vancouver Timbers Red were: Riley Bufford, Nathaniel Cheney, Pasha Hashemi, Tanner Konkright, Tristen Payne, Zachary Pizot, Jonathon Polen, Erik Powell, Matthew Rose, Tyler Shadix, Houston Taie, Brandon Vega and Collin Wong
Konkright has played for this team for eight seasons. Hashemi, Shadix and Vegas played for this team for seven seasons.
Pacific Northwest Soccer Club, whose team knocked off the Timbers on Saturday, is a regional club that serves the Kent-Redmond area. Eastside FC beat Pacific Northwest Maroon in Sunday’s championship match, which was decided on penalty kicks.
• Founders Cup champions — The Vancouver Timbers boys under-16 team won the Founders Cup state championship on Feb. 3, beating a team from Edmonds 3-0 in the final.
Members of the team were: Seth Witherup, Will Warne, Nick Griffin, Mack Stone, Tyler Thomas, Justin Franklin, Jared Wogen, Alex Cochell, Eric Switzer, Josh Shepherd, Ashton Rimer, Blake Brunsch, Grant Alcorn, Shane Dixon, Griffin Lake and Colton Arends. The team was coached by Mark Towers assisted by Dave Stone.The team outscored its opponents 15-2 in the developmental-level state tournament.
Fort Vancouver Run is March 3
Registration is under way for the Fred Meyer Fort Vancouver Run, which will be held Sunday, March 3.
Now in its fifth year, the event includes a 15-kilometer run, a 10-kilometer run or walk, and a 6-kilometer run. Kids races follow the main events, which last year drew more than 1,000 runners and walkers.
All races start and finish at the parking lot of the Fred Meyer Grand Central store just off of Exit 1 from Highway 14.

Some money from registration fees will go to the Fort Vancouver National Trust, which helps support the Fort Vancouver National Site, according to race organizer Brian Davis of Energy Events.
There will be registration beginning at 7 a.m. on the day of the races. The races start at 8:15 and 8:45 a.m. Certain roads around the shopping center and the Fort Vancouver National Site will be controlled by flaggers during the races.
