Is winter over? Going by the calendar, we have almost six weeks yet, but we weather folks call March the first month of spring. Two weeks left in February.
If high pressure moves farther offshore, we get cold Canadian air for the last week of the month. This week? Some clouds, some sunshine, maybe a dribble-drabble of rain or drizzle.
The January rain report: I had 3.70 inches in Salmon Creek; Murphy Dennis, near Clark County Rifles, 10.49 inches; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 6.50 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 5.52 inches; Judy Darke, Felida, 3.45 inches; Irv St. Germain, Prune Hill, 6.01 inches; Bob Starr, Cougar, 11.75 inches; Phil Delany, Dole Valley, 12.50 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lakeshore, 3.42 inches; Bud Maddux, Home Valley, 4.49 inches; Pete Conrad, near Tukes Mountain, 6.57 inches; Merle Moore, west of Yacolt, 11.56 inches; Dave Campbell, west of Heisson, 6.46 inches; Tyler Mode from his Minnehaha station, 3.61 inches; Sandy Nesvick, east Vancouver, 6.02 inches; Barry Fitzthum, Amboy, 9.22 inches; Gary Collins, Brush Prairie, 6.96 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 9.26 inches; Jim Koll, Five Corners, 5.69 inches; Dan Hein, Camas, 7.41 inches; Larry Lebsack, Hazel Dell, 5.37 inches; Bill Sobolewski, Livingston Mountain, 10.53 inches; and Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 3.80 inches.
Ellen Smart noted that the robins never really left this winter and the frogs are beginning to sing. Larry Lebsack added, “The daffodils are sprouting, and sunset is almost 5:30.” All good signs.
