Bennington — A team from Shahala Middle School almost made the championships at a regional science competition Jan. 26. The Evergreen Public Schools students competed against 63 other middle school teams from Western Washington and Oregon at University of Portland for the Bonneville Power Administration Regional Science Bowl. The top four teams made it to the championship rounds, with the Shahala team ranking just out of reach in fifth place. The school’s team won the regional competition in both 2011 and 2010. BPA bills its competition, started in 1992, as the nation’s largest regional science bowl. This year’s winning middle school team was Team Atom from Bellevue, which in April will head to Washington, D.C., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl. As previously reported by The Columbian, Vancouver’s Mountain View High School won first place Feb. 2 in the high school division of BPA’s competition. They’ll travel to the National Science Bowl on April 25.
