BALTIMORE (AP) — Rodney Elliot scored 21 points in leading UMBC to a 63-48 win over Navy on Monday night.

The first half ended with Navy leading 21-20 as both teams had a hard time getting the ball into the basket. But UMBC broke away near the end of the second half going up 50-37 and Navy failed to respond.

The Retrievers sent the Midshipmen to the free throw line only once in the game, while themselves hitting 9 of 15 attempts. Navy’s dismal shooting continued into the second half making just 31 percent of their attempts from the field in the game.

Brandon Venturini and Zach Fong each had 15 points for the Midshipmen

Navy defeated UMBC in Annapolis 73-58 in an earlier nonconference game this season.

Navy (5-6) opens conference play in the Patriot League on Thursday.

UMBC (4-9) opens conference play in the America East on Jan. 5.
