MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Malcolm Brooks scored 20 of his career-high 24 points in the second half to lead Pepperdine past BYU 80-74 Monday night.
The Waves (9-5, 2-0 West Coast Conference) beat the Cougars for the first time in five tries since BYU joined the WCC. The loss was the fourth in a row for BYU, its first such streak since coach Dave Rose took the reins of the program in 2003.
Pepperdine took a 40-28 lead into halftime and led by as many as 13 in the second half.
BYU (8-7, 0-2) used a 13-3 run to pull within three, 68-65, with 2:55 to go, but Brooks answered with one of his six 3-pointers and the Waves made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 43 seconds to seal the victory.
