Stage 1 burn ban announced for Clark County

A stagnant air mass expected to settle over the region this week has prompted a burn ban in Clark County, officials announced today.

The burn ban will take effect at 6 p.m. this evening, according to the Southwest Clean Air Agency.

The agency is imposing a Stage 1 ban, which means the use of uncertified wood stoves — generally older than 1990 — is prohibited. The use of all fireplaces and outdoor burning is also banned.

Homes that use wood burning as their only source of heat, however, are exempt from the restriction.

Stagnant air allows pollutants to accumulate, which can worsen air quality and cause adverse health effects for some people.

The burn ban is expected to continue at least through Friday afternoon, according to the clean air agency.
