The Internal Revenue Service said it will begin processing 2013 tax returns Jan. 31, 10 days later than it had originally planned, due to delays caused by the 16-day partial government shutdown this fall.
The opening date for the 2014 tax season is one day later than last year’s opening, which was late due to Congressional tax law changes in January, the IRS said. It noted that year-end tax planning information has been added to IRS.gov this week and encouraged taxpayers to use e-file or Free File as the fastest way to receive refunds.
The IRS said many software companies are expected to begin accepting returns in January and hold them until its systems open on Jan. 31.
